Information Technology Management Doctoral Program
The Doctoral Program in Information Systems is a scholarly program designed to prepare individuals for academic careers in research, teaching, and public service at institutions of higher learning in the United States and other countries. The goal of the program is to provide the students with an educational foundation and the rich experience needed for them to contribute the information systems discipline through the development, integration, and dissemination of knowledge.
The doctoral program encourages students to pursue a wide range of research questions related to the management and use of information technologies in firms. Research interests span the economic, behavioral, technical, and organizational aspects of information systems in organizations. The program draws upon a world-class information systems faculty that has published in top journals, holds editorships in the leading journals, and contributes to the leadership of the academic discipline of information systems. Collaborations with other established researchers particularly in accounting, marketing and supply chain, management, computer science, and telecommunications allow students to develop strong multidisciplinary approaches toward research on significant information systems issues. Strong ties between the Eli Broad Graduate School of Management and the corporate community offers students with access to a variety of Fortune 1000 firms in a variety of industries for their research.
The doctoral program is designed to provide the theoretical knowledge and research skills required by the rigors of the academic disciplines. At the same time, the program is designed to heighten sensitivity to relevant research issues in information systems. These dual objectives are accomplished through doctoral seminars, research workshops, and participation in ongoing research projects. Doctoral students are expected to be in residence on a full-time basis during the program. While in the course work stage of the program, doctoral students are also assigned as teaching and/or research assistants. Upon completion of course work, students are required pass a comprehensive exam in information systems and then complete a dissertation that demonstrates their ability to conduct an original research project. A Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree is a confirmation that the recipient has demonstrated a high level of scholarship and is able to teach at the university level and to conduct scholarly research independently.
Interested parties can download the doctoral student manual in either Microsoft Word® or Adobe Acrobat® (PDF) format. (Help downloading the Acrobat reader program is also available.)
