- Faculty
The accounting faculty at Michigan State University has diverse research interests, are supportive of collaboration with doctoral students, and are professionally successful. To learn more about each faculty member, see faculty. Many of the faculty are involved in joint faculty research projects with doctoral students. In addition, members of the faculty are on the editorial boards or serve as editors of academic journals, serve as officers in national academic organizations (AAA), and interact with industry, business and public-accounting firms, and professional organizations (AICPA, IMA). - Students
The doctoral students in the accounting program are exceptionally well qualified to pursue research and teaching careers at the university level. The typical student in the program has a GPA in excess of 3.5 (undergraduate and graduate). GMAT scores range from the upper-600's to the upper-700's. The faculty is committed to a diverse student group, both in terms of research interests, gender, and ethnic background. Students currently in residence have won many fellowships. - Data and Computer Resources
The College and Department of Accounting have state-of-the-art computer and data resources available for use by doctoral students. The College of Business has two computer labs with state-of-the-art desktop computers which are connected to the College network and internet resources. The Department of Accounting has a computer lab for doctoral students only, as well as providing each doctoral student with a desktop computer. In addition, the department has the data bases that are commonly used in financial and tax accounting research. These data bases include CRSP, COMPUSTAT and other domestic and international databases accessed through the Wharton WRDS system. - Libraries
The MSU library system is ranked among the major research libraries in the U.S. with more than three million volumes, a sophisticated computerized reference system, and access to a variety of database search facilities. The new Gast Business Library, located across the street from the business school in the new Detroit College of Law building, has in excess of 55,000 volumes, including all of the major periodicals in accounting, economics, finance, marketing, management, and other business disciplines. Many other research aids are available, including CD-ROM databases, on-line database services, SEC documents of companies traded on the NYSE, AMSE, and NASDAQ, and a number of accounting and tax services such as CCH and RIA. In addition, the accounting department houses a specialized reference library, with a number of frequently used collections in accounting conveniently available to faculty and doctoral students. - 5. Living Environment
MSU is a community of more than 44,000 students and a distinguished faculty and staff. It offers a college-town environment in the midst of a populous area of the state. The Lansing-East Lansing-Okemos area economy is based on three comparatively different segments: state government (Lansing is the state capitol), the automobile industry (specifically, General Motors), and Michigan State University. Given the moderate size of the metropolitan area (about 400,000), there are an above average number and variety of opportunities available for spouse employment. MSU offers many cultural and recreational opportunities for MSU students. In addition, the greater Lansing area has numerous additional cultural and recreational activities.
Graduate students will find Owen Graduate Center offers dormitory housing next to the Eli Broad Graduate School of Management. Owen Hall is made up of two seven-story dormitories connected by a one-story building that provides space for lounges, lobbies, dining rooms, and administrative offices. There are more than 2,000 furnished brick apartments with utilities and telephone included that have moderate rental cost. In addition, the Lansing-East Lansing-Okemos area provides a full range of apartments, cooperatives, condominiums, and single-family residences.
Campus housing is allocated only after a student has been admitted to MSU. Information concerning graduate dormitory housing and on-campus apartment housing may be obtained from the Residence Halls Main Office, 185 West Holmes Hall, Michigan State University, East Lansing, MI, 48824. Information concerning married-student housing may be obtained from the Married Housing Department, 1205 South Harrison Road, Michigan State University, East Lansing, MI 48824.
Off campus housing is plentiful, but in-coming students are urged to secure housing arrangements as early as possible.
