The Department of Accounting and Information Systems grants thousands of dollars each year to accounting students who demonstrate outstanding academic performance.
In order to apply you must be an MSU undergraduate or graduate student majoring in accounting or be admitted to an MS degree program in accounting.

External Scholarships and Awards Available
The purpose of this section is to provide MSU Accounting students with additional information regarding scholarships. These scholarships are not administered through the Accounting department.
Phi Kappa Phi
The Michigan State University Chapter of The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi is inviting outstanding senior PKP students and graduates who have not begun graduate work to submit applications for the National Phi Kappa Phi Graduate Fellowship Competition. Sixty competitive Fellowships of $5,000 each and forty $2,000 Awards of Excellence will be awarded for the 2009-2010 academic year. All national nominees receive a one-year active membership in Phi Kappa Phi.
The criteria considered in the competition are 1) undergraduate academic performance; 2) leadership and service on the campus and in the community; 3) evidence of graduate potential; 4) personal statement of educational perspective, purpose and objectives; and 5) letters of recommendation from three individuals who can attest to the applicant's performance and character.

AICPA/Accountemps Student Scholarship
Competitive award of $2,500 scholarships for five outstanding AICPA student affiliate members pursuing studies in accounting, finance or information systems who, in the opinion of the Scholarship Selection Committee, show significant potential to become successful business people.
The Scholarships are available only to full-time undergraduate and graduate students at regionally accredited institutions in the United States. All applicants must be U.S. citizens. Those persons who are already CPAs are not eligible for this scholarship.

AICPA Minority Scholarship
The American Institute of Certified Public Accountants provides scholarships for minority (Black, Native American/Alaskan native, or Pacific Island races, or of Hispanic ethnic origin) accounting students. The scholarships are competitive, merit- and need-based awards of up to $5,000 for outstanding accounting students who, in the opinion of the Institute's Selection Committee, show significant potential to become certified public accountants. All applicants must be U.S. citizens.
Frank L. Greathouse Government Accounting Scholarship
The Frank L. Greathouse Government Accounting Scholarship of $3,500 is available for award to one or more undergraduate or graduate students enrolled in full-time study preparing for a career in state and local government finance.

FEI Annual Scholarship Program
The Western Michigan Chapter of Financial Executives International is making $10,000 in SCHOLARSHIPS available to students at colleges and universities in Western Michigan who meet certain criteria (listed below). We are extending an invitation for your students to participate. This year there will be 4 scholarships awarded:

The following criteria will be used for evaluation of submissions:

QUESTION for CASE:
Over the past 50 years, accounting for research and development (R&D) costs have been treated in different ways under United States (US) GAAP. Currently, US GAAP and IFRS differ in the treatment of R & D costs.
Briefly discuss the history of accounting for R&D costs in the US. Include a summary comparison of current US GAAP and reporting under IFRS. What would you recommend and why, for the accounting and reporting of R&D costs as FASB and the IASB attempt to converge on this issue?
Please limit your discussion to five double-spaced pages.
Please have all materials submitted by MONDAY, MARCH 22, 2010. The Scholarship Awards will be presented to the winning applicants at the APRIL 14, 2010 FEI-WM Chapter Dinner Meeting (5:30 PM, at the University Club, Downtown Grand Rapids, Michigan). The selected candidates will be notified by APRIL 1, 2010. The 4 students receiving the awards are required to attend. The top candidate will be asked to do a short (5 - 10 minutes) overview of the case study essay he/she submitted at the Awards presentation.

IMA Scholarships
The Institute of Management Accountants offers several scholarships to undergraduate and master's degree accounting majors. All IMA student members can apply for various IMA scholarships, which carry awards ranging from $1,000 to $5,000. These include the IMA Memorial Education Fund (MEF) Scholarships and the Stuart Cameron and Margaret McLeod Memorial Scholarship. In addition, IMA's Foundation for Applied Research offers a research grant program for doctoral students who are pursuing research in the area of management accounting area of management accounting. The deadline for applications is February 15, 2010.

NAFOA's 2009 Scholarship Program
NAFOA is dedicated to supporting Native Americans pursuing their education. We believe that sound financial management strengthens tribal governments and organizations. This creates strong Native American communities now and for generations to come. Through our scholarship program we hope to help support the future financial leaders of Native American communities.
NAFOA's scholarship program is meant to assist Native American students working towards a degree or certificate in any financially related field. In 2008 we aim to award a minimum of three scholarships, which will be presented in the fall.

The National Society of Accountants (NSA) Scholarship Foundation is accepting applications for financial assistance. To be eligible, you must be an undergraduate accounting major, have a "B" or better overall grade point average, and be a US citizen. NSPA Scholarship
The National Society of Public Accountants is offering scholarships to students majoring in accounting with a "B" or better GPA who are U.S. or Canadian citizens attending a U.S. accredited business school. Students may apply for a scholarship for their second, third, or fourth year of studies, provided they have committed themselves to a major in accounting throughout the remainder of their college career. The application, appraisal form, and official transcript must be received by March 10. Faxes will not be accepted. The Institute of Internal Auditors
The Institute of Internal Auditors is a 150,000-member international professional organization that meets the needs of internal auditors in more than 165 countries and territories. The world's leader in certification, education, research, and technological guidance for the profession, The Institute serves as the profession's watchdog and resource on significant auditing issues around the globe. The IIA also provides internal auditing practitioners, executive management, boards of directors and audit committees with standards, guidance, and information on internal auditing best practices. The IIA serves internal auditors through its extensive network of regional and local chapters.
The Lansing Chapter of the Institute of Internal Auditors was established in 1979 and currently has 114 members. We hold monthly breakfast meetings where we host speakers on relevant business topics. The Lansing IIA Chapter will award one $1,000 scholarship and one $500 scholarship to two students who exhibit an interest in the internal auditing profession. The scholarship will be awarded in April 2009. Preference will be given to students who attend our monthly chapter meetings.

The Southeast Michigan Chapter of the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners Scholarship Program
Students interested in the exciting and topical world of fraud-fighting may want to apply for a $1,000 scholarship to be applied against educational costs!
How to Qualify:
- Have completed 60 post-secondary hours of study
- Be enrolled in an accounting, auditing, criminal justice, information technology, pre-law or other curriculum which could lead to a career in fraud-fighting
- Demonstrate a desire to enter this exciting field

AccountingWEB Accounting Student Scholarship
AccountingWEB Accounting Student Scholarship program is open to United States citizens attending colleges, universities, and professional schools of accounting in the United States. Students applying for the AccountingWEB Accounting Student Scholarship must have already completed at least one semester or two trimesters of full-time college and must be declared accounting majors, effective for the fall of 2009.
The scholarship is a $500 award, payable to students who attend college as full-time students, have a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale, or the equivalent, and who are declared accounting majors. The Gates Millennium Scholars Program, administered by the United Negro College Fund (UNCF), will provide scholarships and fellowships for outstanding low-income African-American, Native American, Hispanic American, and Asian American students to attend the undergraduate and graduate institutions of their choice.
