Undergrads in Accounting
An Industry-Connected Curriculum
Because good accountants need to be good business people first, our curriculum is built around a careful balance of business and general education courses along with accounting. The Broad College core program enables you to draw from course offerings in other departments to round out your accounting education and better prepare you for the world of business.
Ongoing curriculum evaluation by faculty and our External Advisory Board (made up of the largest CPA firms and other top companies) continually improves the quality of our program, ensuring that you develop the skills needed to compete.
Our required careers course, Preparing for an Accounting Career, thoroughly explains the profession and its opportunities. Practicing accountants representing industry, government, and CPA firms offer their insights. In addition, the course helps you put together a quality resume and cover letter, develop interviewing skills, and acquire necessary job search skills.
Celebrated Faculty
As an undergraduate, you will learn from the best instructors in the country. The number of teaching awards earned by our faculty at the college, university, and national levels exemplifies our instructional excellence and commitment to helping you achieve your goals.
In addition to devoting time to you, faculty members serve as active leaders in the professional accounting community within Michigan, throughout the country, and around the world. These links to business help us continually improve the quality of our research, teaching, and overall service. The strength of our nationally recognized program is clearly demonstrated through our faculty's creativity, enthusiasm, and involvement.
Internships
Our popular internship program takes you off campus for a semester to work full time for an accounting firm or within the accounting department of a business. You get actual work experience, make valuable contacts, and companies get a first-hand look at your skills. Many students are offered permanent entry-level positions as a result of their internship activity.
Scholarships
Our active scholarship program - exclusively for accounting majors - is based on academic success and leadership activities.
Several accounting firms and individuals make contributions to over 50 different scholarships, helping students achieve their academic goals.
Outside the Classroom
Open to all class levels, the Accounting Student Association plans events to help you learn more about the profession. Each semester the clubs bring in speakers, arrange office or plant visits to observe accounting professionals on the job, and holds social events for members.
Beta Alpha Psi is an honorary society for high achieving students within the accounting major. From trends in public accounting to ethics in the profession, the national fraternity offers biweekly presentations by members of industry, government, and CPA firms.
The mission of the National Association of Black Accountants, Inc. (NABA) is to address the professional needs of minority students and maximize their career potential in the accounting and finance profession. The MSU chapter of NABA plans a variety of activities each semester to facilitate interaction between business representatives and accounting/finance students.
All groups provide a great way to connect with others in your major and offer many opportunities for involvement and leadership.
