Volunteer Income Tax Assistance
VITA or the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program is a nonprofit organization that assists people in preparing income tax returns. The program is sponsored by the Internal Revenue Service and is a service provided by different colleges and universities across the United States.
At Michigan State student volunteers help low-income individuals and families in the surrounding community complete federal, state, local, and/or foreign tax forms. Although all majors are welcome, Accounting majors find VITA to be an especially enriching experience and it provides valuable career-related experience.
Students can begin signing up for the program in November and training usually begins in January. Additional details and sign up procedures can be found at the Center for Service-Learning and Civic Engagement.
