History

Founded in 1855 as the nation's first land grant university, Michigan State University served as the prototype for 69 land grant institutions later established under the Morrill Act of 1862 and was the first institution of higher learning in the United States to teach scientific agriculture. The Eli Broad College of Business traces its history to 1861, when J.G. Ramsdell began teaching bookkeeping and commerical law at what was then known as Michigan Agricultural College. In 1991, Eli Broad pledged a $20 million gift to the college, which resulted in the naming of the school in his honor.
