Annual Report 2004-2005

Broad School grads
are prepared for the next century

Dean Robert Duncan

Dean's Message

One of the great opportunities presented by an anniversary is that these occasions give everyone involved a chance to look back and look ahead, sharing both memories and hopes. As Michigan State University celebrates its 150th anniversary, we can take pride in what we have accomplished — and by "we," I take in the whole remarkable parade of leaders, students and alumni who created this robust learning community we know today.

We are celebrating some important milestones this year here at the Broad School, including:

  • 50th anniversary of one of the most well-known of the Broad School's executive education programs, the Purchasing and Supply Chain Management Executive Seminar.
  • 40th anniversary of the Broad School's Executive MBA program, the second oldest of its kind in the world.
  • 30th anniversary of the opening of the Broad School's Management Education Center in Troy, Mich.
  • 10th anniversary of the Broad School's Weekend MBA Program.

Each year, the Broad School adds to this history of achievement and academic services. As you will see in these pages, 2004-05 was a year in which our faculty made outstanding research contributions to their fields, our students triumphed on a national level and our degree and nondegree programs introduced innovative new ideas that will inspire the next generation of students. While the nostalgic photos and timelines in each section of the report show milestones in our history, it is the stories about faculty and students that show the promise of our future.

That future has been nurtured by the generosity of our alumni and friends who have made personal and financial commitments to us during The Campaign for MSU. Their help and the resource support of President Lou Anna K. Simon and Acting Provost John Hudzik during this period of reduced state funding have enabled us to not only keep faculty salaries competitive, but also to add new faculty positions so we could enhance the educational experience of our students.

Finally, I would like to thank the Broad team — our alumni advisory board, faculty, staff and students for their commitment to excellence. As you will see in the following pages, they have collaborated to accomplish a great deal this year.
