Broad alumni connect with their school — and each other

Alumni networking and career development activities during 2005-06 included:

  • Dan Mathews (BA Hotel and Restaurant Management ’66), the 2005 chairperson of the Broad School Alumni Networking Committee, visited Denver-area alumni on Sept. 9, 2005, to talk about about networking opportunities available through the Broad School and the Denver-area MSU regional club.
  • Nearly 400 alumni, businesspeople and MBA students attended the 40th annual Broad Executive Forum (of Detroit), on Oct. 5, 2005, to hear “An Insider’s Guide to Outsourcing,” presented by faculty, industry and labor leaders, and executive keynote speaker Steve Schuckenbrock of EDS.
  • Atlanta alumni participated in a March 18, 2006, event featuring alumni leadership in the Atlanta area and faculty presenters on the topic “Leadership Characteristics Industry Wants.”
  • Months of planning by Chicago business alumni resulted in the successful launch of the first Broad Executive Forum outside of Michigan, on May 10, 2006, in downtown Chicago. The event, “Expanding the Borders of Business,” attracted hundreds of business and MSU alumni, clients and friends to attend afternoon workshops and a keynote address by Borders Group president, chairman and CEO Greg Josefowicz (BA Marketing ’74).
  • Alumni in Charlotte, North Carolina, established a Founders’ Council and Launch Committee in June 2006 to develop a schedule of Broad School-sponsored networking events in the area for 2006-07.

On-campus activities and sponsorship for alumni events in 2005-06 included:

  • The 2006 Undergraduate Commencement Luncheon celebrating the Broad School’s newest alumni along with their family and friends. The event is cosponsored by the Broad School Alumni Association and the Dean’s Office.
  • The 2006 Kedzie Reunion welcome breakfast for graduates of the College of Business Class of 1956 and earlier, June 9, at the James B. Henry Center for Executive Development.
  • Golf outing sponsorships for the Weekend MBA alumni on July 29, 2005; Chicago Business Alumni on Sept. 18, 2005; and Executive MBA on June 9, 2006.
  • The 2005 Homecoming Weekend alumni events included college alumni award recognition for Outstanding Alumni, Young Alumni Achievement and Lifetime Alumni Achievement; and the annual pre-game homecoming tailgate.

Scholarships and awards

  • The Broad School Alumni Association sponsors the annual Richard J. Lewis Quality of Excellence Award competition. Four awards are presented to the top continuous improvement/excellence projects of the academic year. The 2004-05 recipients were announced Aug. 30, 2005, at the Broad School’s welcome back event for faculty and staff. Award recipients were Multicultural Business Students, MBA Improvement Team, Master’s in Accounting Program, and the International Business Specialization Team.
  • The Broad School Alumni Association awarded $500 book scholarships to two juniors/seniors of the incoming class of fall 2005.
  • Each year, the Michigan State University Alumni Association (MSUAA) and the Eli Broad College of Business Alumni Association solicit nominations for alumni awards. The 2005 MSUAA award recipients were: Donald Bowersox (M Marketing ’58, PhD Marketing ’60) Distinguished Alumnus Award; Phil Hickey, Jr. (BA Hotel and Restaurant Management ’77), Alumni Service Award; Bruce McCristal (BA Economics ’54), Distinguished Alumnus Award; and I.C. Shah (M Marketing ’64), Distinguished Alumnus Award.
  • Broad School alumni award recipients were Sanjai Bhonsle (MBA Accounting and Finance ’99), Young Alumni Achievement Award; Jeff Boromisa (BA Accounting ’77), Outstanding Alumni Award; Ralph Gilles (Executive MBA ’02), Young Alumni Achievement Award; Francisco Itzaina, Outstanding Alumni Achievement Award (Full-Time MBA ’74), Henry Kimpel (BA Accounting ’52), Lifetime Alumni Achievement Award; Robert Olstein (M Accounting ’66), Outstanding Alumni Achievement Award; and Stuart Reed (BA MLM Purchasing ’83), Outstanding Alumni Achievement Award.

Three well-known faces from Michigan State’s class of ’54: Broad School Dean Emeritus Donald J. Bowersox (left) celebrates his retirement from 40 years of service to the Broad School this spring with his classmates, The Honorable Delores M. Cook, member of the Board of Trustees of Michigan State University, and J. Bruce McCristal, who retired from his 30- year executive career at General Motors to become author of The Spirit of Michigan State.
