Make the Connection
Connie Lawson, Broad's New Alumni Relations Coordinator
The toughest parts of a new job are keeping the names and faces straight, and sorting through the "to do" list of responsibilities to find the right jump start activities.
With my first day only a few, short weeks before four or five major alumni events, the jump start phase was clearly defined:
| Priority | Activity | |
|     | A. | Make it happen. |
|---|---|---|
|     | A. | Make it happen now. |
|     | A. | Make it look easy. |
Here's what I learned:
- Alumni expect to be able to connect with one another. Little wonder that the "Boomers" and X- and Y- Gens are clamoring for high-tech access! Our grads are more than early adapters, they're the ones who create, market, and modify products that are signposts on the information highway.
- Alumni expect a lifetime of value from their Broad experiences. Delivering that value means on-line resources for mid-career transitions, and Broad-sponsored business resources like conferences, seminars, and literature.
- Alumni expect to give back to the Broad School and MSU. From the very foundations of the North Business Complex to the new Financial Analysis Laboratory, the Gast Library, and the James B. Henry Center for Executive Development, there is the evidence of a dedicated alumni willing to make a commitment to new generations of Broad students.
- Much of what alumni expect is already available within the college or the university. Taking the inventory and making the connection will deliver some solutions right away. Others take time, money and talent, but every day I am excited to see the ways in which expectations turn into opportunities.
- I am here to make your alumni experience valuable to you. Please let me know how I can achieve this. I encourage your comments and contact. For more information, or to reach me call (517) 432-7442 or lawson@bus.msu.edu.
