Full-Time MBA Dubbed Top 25 "Techno" Program
For the second time in two years, the full-time MBA program has been named one of the Top 25 techno-MBA programs in the nation by Computerworld. The Broad School was recognized for its competitive GMAT score, outstanding placement statistics, and low student-to-faculty ratio and out-of-state tuition.
Consistently rated as a top MBA program, this ranking solidly places the Broad School among the best for graduate management education in the United States. The full-time MBA program is often cited for its core curriculum, team effectiveness research lab, career services, personalized attention, and information technology resources.
Computerworld asked corporate recruiters to nominate the best techno-MBA programs based on their experience hiring MBA graduates from the program. Business school leaders across the country also were asked to nominate the best programs based on the quality of the curricula in those programs.
For more information on the Computerworld rankings, read the article in the October 22 edition, or visit the magazine online at www.computerworld.com. Click on "This Week in Print" and find the October 22 issue in the archives area.
Kellogg Hosts Annual ICE Competition
The Integrative Case Experience (ICE) Competition, an integral part of the full-time MBA program at the Broad School, was won by a talented group of MBA students. The ICE Case competition occurs as part of a core strategic management class. The first half of the course uses the case study method to help students develop a senior management perspective and to integrate knowledge from all functional areas of business. In the second half, students put their knowledge to work by acting as consultants on a current business challenge faced by a real company.
This year, Kellogg served as the ICE company and sent five senior managers to judge the finalists. The judges were impressed with the quality of the presentations, depth of analysis, and ability to answer probing questions. Students learned how to analyze issues from a CEO's perspective and to deal with the ambiguity and uncertainty associated with strategic business issues.
Congratulations go to James Gies, Amy Kitchen, Lisa Makar, and Brian Niepoky for capturing first place among 22 teams. Their strong research, creative recommendations, and professional presentation impressed the Executive Management team from the Natural and Frozen Foods Division of Kellogg.
Weekend and Executive MBA Programs Restructured
In an effort to reinforce and strengthen the MBA programs for working professionals, the Weekend MBA and Executive MBA programs recently were reorganized. Lucy Maillette, PhD, director of the Weekend MBA program, will now serve as executive director of both programs.
This restructuring takes advantage of the synergies between the Weekend and Executive MBA programs, while maintaining and promoting each program's distinctive strengths.
Under the reorganization, administrative operations of the Weekend and Executive MBA programs have combined. The campus-based staff for Weekend and Executive MBA programs relocated to new offices in the Henry Center as a part of the change. In addition, the Weekend MBA program now holds all classes in the Henry Center.
Broad Undergraduate Students Win Paper Competition
Two undergraduate students from the Broad School and the MSU Honors College received honors in the "Paulette L. Stenzel Student Paper Competition," sponsored by the Tri-State Academy of Legal Studies in Business. Professor Stenzel, an international business law professor in the Department of Finance at the Broad School, is the founder of this interstate competition.
MSU students have won this competition more often in the last five years than any other school in the Tri-State area (Michigan, Indiana, and Ohio). Each paper is published in the 2001 Proceedings of the Tri-State Academy of Legal Studies in Business.
Papers are selected through a blind review process. All participants received written comments from the reviewers. Timothy Dixon and Kimera J. King were the recipients of the award. Dixon, for his paper titled "The Euro: Its Development, Uses, and Relationship to Contracts"; and King, for her paper titled "International Issues on Intellectual Property Protection."
In Memoriam
Lewis J. Minor, PhD, professor emeritus and benefactor for The School of Hospitality Business passed away on March 17, 2002. Minor earned his PhD from Michigan State --in 1964 and became an assistant professor for The School, retiring in 1984. Minor and his wife, Ruth, endowed several positions for The School as well as other charitable and philanthropic organizations.
The School Hosts Hospitality Educators Summit
The School of Hospitality Business' Hilton Lecture Series began in 1989 with a generous grant from Hilton Hotels Corporation to create the Hilton Hotels Professorship in Hospitality Financial Management. Since its inception, Raymond Schmidgall, associate professor for The School, has served as the Hilton Hotels Professor. Topics selected each year are based on current issues and pressing challenges.
Hilton Lecture Series XII is known as the Spartan Hospitality Educators Summit. All speakers and participants have roots at Michigan State, either as former students and/or as faculty members. The Summit officially launched The School's 75th anniversary. It was held last fall.
To make this event complete, a "Green and White Paper" has been produced. It presents a synthesis of the Summit participants' discussions about the future of hospitality education. The discussions examined the role of hospitality education from both an educator and industry recruiter perspective. Michigan State's hospitality education has far-reaching benefits. As a forerunner in the field of formal hospitality education, The School offers not only prestige, but also experience and tradition to its students, as shown in the caliber of the alumni that attended this conference. The Green and White paper offers a taste of what is to come in the next 75 years. For more information or a copy of the Green and White paper, please email Lena Loeffler at loeffler@bus.msu.edu.
The School Celebrates 75th Anniversary, Becomes Independent within Broad School
The School of Hospitality Business is celebrating its 75th anniversary this year. The festivities began in September 2001 and will continue through 2002. The School's Alumni Association will publish The Legacy of a Leader, a 400-page collector's volume of The School's history. Authored by Dan Hager, the book offers a behind-the-scenes look at the effect of wars, social change, the automobile, technology, and more on the practice of hospitality and the ways in which young people prepared for their futures. The book offers a glimpse of how The School created and maintained its legacy as a leader in hospitality education. For more information on the 75th anniversary celebration events or the history book, please email Lena Loeffler at loeffler@bus.msu.edu.
In Fall 2001, The School became independent within the Broad School. A new undergraduate curriculum has been developed that will allow students more elective options. New admission criteria include performance in coursework, completion of industry work experience, involvement in service activities, and submission of written statement of intent and goals. While the degree earned will remain the same--a baccalaureate in hospitality business--these changes help solidify The School's position as a top-rated hospitality business school and will respond to the industry's growing demand for hospitality business graduates.

MBS Promotes Leadership and Business Strategy Skills
This fall, the Multicultural Business Students (MBS) executive board sponsored a leadership retreat at the Kellogg Biological Station in Hickory Corners, Michigan. The retreat, which was made possible through fundraising efforts of the executive board, offered team building activities as well as information sessions presented by Michigan State staff and corporate representatives. Thirty undergraduate students, of many different backgrounds, participated in this rewarding retreat.
In addition to leadership training, MBS offered students a different type of strategy building this fall. Since a great deal of business is still conducted on the golf course, MBS hosted their 2nd Annual Golf Clinic at the Forest Aker's training site in October 2001. This outing, designed to introduce novices to the challenging sport of golf, allowed students to learn basic golf skills from one of Forest Aker's on-site instructors.
Cintas Hosts Student Organization Presidents
Last fall, three student organization presidents and members of the Lear Center staff were special guests of the Cintas Corporation. Jayne Jaeger, General Management Association; Janice Kilpela, Marketing Association; and Kate Kossen, Supply Chain Management Association were part of the group that accepted the invitation to fly in "first-class" style to Cintas headquarters in Cincinnati, Ohio, via the company's private jet. There they met with a variety of high-level individuals, toured the facility, learned about the various career opportunities, and saw a preview of the company's predicted growth.
The site visit was coordinated by Dave Armbrester, the general manager at Cintas in Westland, Michigan. Armbrester is a Broad School alumni and member of the Lear Center advisory council. Janice Kilpela commented that it was a "once-in-a-lifetime" experience and that she learned a great deal from the visit.
Conference Promotes Leadership, Career Advice for Women MBAs
The full-time MBA program and the Graduate Women in Business (GWIB) recently held the 2nd Annual Women in Business Conference at The James B. Henry Center for Executive Development. The purpose of the conference was to give prospective students insight into the wonderful career and growth opportunities available for women pursuing their MBA. Over 25 prospective students and 20 faculty, staff, and current students attended the conference.
Alison E. Barber, senior associate dean, opened the conference with a welcome address describing the supportive environment provided for women students at both the college and university. After a successful icebreaking activity, students spent time in small groups with current faculty, students, and staff discussing topics ranging from curriculum to scholarships and financial aid. Lucinda Wright, MBA '92, vice president of marketing for the Natural and Functional Foods Division at Kellogg Company, offered insightful, inspiring, and sometimes humorous remarks, encouraging participants to keep perspective and rely on themselves for strength. The evening concluded with a panel of alumni along with a corporate recruiter discussing career planning and job-search topics. Panel members included Maricarmen Huelga, MBA '01; Janine Woldt, MBA '01; Kate Donlon, Tektronix recruiter; and Helen Dashney, director of the MBA Placement and Career Center.
Informal feedback and written evaluations from the conference were very positive. Low enrollment for women in MBA programs indicate the need for this type of event. The Broad School will continue to focus efforts on diversifying its student body.
Lear Center Participates in Live Radio Show
In the early morning hours on November 2, 2001, the Lear Corporation Career Services Center hosted WJR's (760 AM) Paul W. Smith. His three-hour morning show highlighted the Lear Center and, as part of the program, Paul interviewed MSU President Peter McPherson, chairman of the Lear Corporation Ken Way, MSU football coach Bobby Williams, and U of M football coach Lloyd Carr.
This special broadcast coincided with the two-year anniversary of the dedication of the Lear Center. One of the focuses of the show was the MSU vs. Michigan football game scheduled for the next day.
Paul W. Smith was dressed in gear from his U of M alma mater; however, he was showered with a multitude of green and white items during his stay at MSU. The Lear Center would like to send a special thanks to the Lear Corporation, MSU University Relations, and WJR for making this event come to fruition.
