Student and alumni speakers extend congratulations to new grads Each on the threshold of a new phase in their life, graduating senior Ryan Kelley (BA '04), and alumnus Ken Way (BA '61, MBA '71), the recently retired chairman and CEO of the multinational Lear Corporation, shared their views of what it takes to be successful - and they were strikingly similar. Using the school's namesake Eli Broad as an example, Kelley advised students to seek opportunities and then pour their time and talent into realizing that dream. Read More Way told students that they leave MSU and the Broad School with all the tools they need to succeed, but that the measure of their success will come from the commitment and drive they invest in career building. Michael Kalis (BA '04) addressed the undergraduate spring convocation, May 5, at the Breslin Center. Condoleezza Rice, national security adviser, was the main convocation speaker. At the Executive MBA Celebration Dinner, May 6, at the MSU Management Education Center in Troy, graduates and guests welcomed alumna Blaire Miller (MBA '95), senior vice president and manager, International Corporate Banking, Standard Federal Bank. She spoke to the class about the meaning of the EMBA experience and provided lively anecdotes and memories from her own student days. Miller exhorted the students to continue to learn, volunteer in their communities, and become active members of the alumni association. MBAs pledge over $125,000 in 2004 class gift campaigns This spring, the full-time MBA class of 2004 MBA completed the third annual class gift campaign. They raised $61,966 for the MBA class gift endowment and had a 69 percent participation rate. The Executive MBA program held their second annual class gift campaign. They pledged $64,800 and had an 85 percent participation rate. The monies raised in the EMBA campaign will fund the EMBA class gift endowment and a guest lecture series. Broad MBA team takes 1st place in Big Ten case competition For the second time in three years, a team of four Broad School MBA students placed first at the annual Big Ten Case Competition. The team, comprised of first-year MBA students Corrie Brankatelli, Subhamoy Ganguly, Atul Suri and Jon Wood, won the event held recently at The Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio. This year's trophy has been added to a Big Ten Case collection that includes first place distinctions received in 2002 and 1999. Read More Board member nominations due May 25 The Nominations Committee of the Broad Alumni Association will accept names in nomination for open seats on the 2005 board of directors. Nomination forms including criteria for membership are available by e-mail from the Alumni Relations Office; by phone: (517) 432-7442. Nominations should be submitted to the Broad Alumni Relations Office no later than May 25, 2004. A listing of current Broad Alumni Association board members can be found at Broad Alumni Leaders. Alumni recognition program seeks nominees by June 1 The Broad Alumni Association's annual alumni awards program seeks nominations for the 2004 Young Alumni Achievement Award, Outstanding Alumni Achievement Award and the Lifetime Alumni Achievement Award from alumni, faculty and staff. The nominating period for this year's awards is April 15 through June 1. Awards will be presented Homecoming weekend, October 15-16. Nominating criteria and a listing of past honorees are available at Broad Alumni Leaders. Variety of career services assist current students and alumni Whether you're a recent graduate or mid-career professional, a variety of career services are available to you through the Broad School's Lear Center, MSU Career Services and the MSU Alumni Association! Services range from jobs boards and resume critiques to assessment tools and career fair information and much more. Selected services are free to MSU Alumni Association members. Access these career tools through the Broad Web site. Online chat connects alums Nearly 20 members of the MBA class of 2002 joined an online chat to reconnect with their classmates in early April. Alum Kelly Ritter commented, "The chat was a great way to reconnect with classmates I hadn't talked to in two years! It was wonderful to hear about the experiences of my MBA friends in various companies and locations around the world." |
