FMI Scholars Prepare for the Future
The Financial Markets Institute Scholars have continued their professional and academic development this spring semester through a wide variety of activities, including:
Spring Admissions
The FMI welcomed eight new scholars - joining the Institute as of April 2009 were David Elliott, Andrew Gauthier, Amarpreet Jhita, David Kryshak, Trevor Logan, Alexander Pryka, Norman Yu and Mark Zaguskin.
Congratulations to our Graduates!
On May 8, the senior FMI Scholars gathered for one last time before leaving campus. Dr. Geoffrey and Professor Elizabeth Booth hosted a reception at their home, including a champagne toast, for the graduating scholars and their families.
Awards and Scholarships
Our scholars continue to raise the bar academically. Scholarship/award recipients include Mitchell Brown who received the Shao-Chang Lee Scholarship for outstanding accomplishment in Asian Studies. Justin Van Vleck was the recipient of the Financial Executives institute (FEI) award and the Lincoln Fellowship Award from the Department of Political Science. The FEI recognizes Justin as the top finance student at Michigan State University for 2009.
Fundraising Efforts
Through a partnership with Noodles & Co. and tireless marketing efforts by everyone in the Institute, the students were able to raise $365 for the program by recruiting friends, family and others to dine at the East Lansing establishment in February.
Employment Opportunities
Given current constrained market conditions, senior scholars have done well in the job market. Those who have accepted jobs to date will be joining firms that include Banc of America Securities, Deloitte, General Electric, Lazard Frères & Co., Morgan Stanley, P&M Corporate Finance, Plante & Moran Financial Advisors, Robert W. Baird, and Stout Risius Ross, Inc.
Junior scholars have successfully landed internships at firms including Barclays Capital, BMO Capital, Citigroup, Deutsche Bank, General Electric, General Mills, Liberty Lane Partners, Masco and Republic Partners. If you hear of either full-time or internship opportunities, please forward to fmi@bus.msu.edu
R.I.S.E.
The Financial Markets Institute had two student representatives at this year’s Redefining Investment Strategy Education (R.I.S.E.), the Ninth Annual Global Student Investment Forum that took place March 26 through 28 at the University of Dayton campus. They were Jeff Smith and Ruoting Sun.
R.I.S.E., hosted by The University of Dayton and the United Nations Global Compact, is the first forum of its kind to bring leading students, faculty and Wall Street together in an interactive learning environment to discuss a range of pertinent issues facing investment professionals.
MII Stock Pitch Competition
Four students representing the Student Investment Association (SIA) at Michigan State University’s Eli Broad College of Business took first-place honors at the Michigan Interactive Investments (MII) Intercollegiate Stock Pitch Competition held March 20-21 at the University of Michigan’s Ross School of Business.
Senior Justin Van Vleck and juniors Jeffrey Holycross, Jeffrey Smith and Bo Yang competed against 16 collegiate teams from across the nation, beating out the University of Michigan, Penn State and Villanova in the final round of competition. The Broad School team’s analysis of DHT Maritime impressed judges from firms including Barclays Capital; JP Morgan; Optiver; Loomis, Sayles & Co. and SunTrust Robinson Humphrey. The students have contributed the $3,000 top prize to the live-money portfolio run by the student association.
Alumni Involvement
Special thanks to all FMI board members, FMI Friends and college alumni and friends who have met with scholars on campus during the 2008-2009 academic year both formally through board meetings, corporate presentations and class lectures and more casually in one-on-one and small group discussions. A special acknowledgement goes to all who have met with scholars in your offices and through telephone calls.
Road Shows
This fall the FMI Scholars will again visit Wall Street for the annual New York Road Show. If you are interested in hosting a scholar visit on September 17-18, 2009, please email or call the Institute.
