A team of three Finance juniors from the Broad School took top honors for the second time in three years at the third-annual Fisher Biz Quiz National Challenge, sponsored by Nationwide Insurance and The Wall Street Journal, held recently at The Ohio State University's Fisher College of Business. The 24 teams in the "quiz-bowl" competition were required to demonstrate their knowledge of business news, issues and trends by answering rapid-fire questions based on articles appearing in the October and November editions of The Wall Street Journal.
The Broad School team, which triumphed over Wisconsin (#2) and Minnesota (#3) in the finals to bring home the first-place award, was comprised of juniors Stefanie Hilton (of Washington, Mich.), Jeff Holycross (from Livonia, Mich.) and Jeff Smith (from Kentwood, Mich.), all scholars in the Broad School’s Financial Markets Institute and members of MSU’s Honors College. Other schools they faced in the competition include Carnegie Mellon, Florida, Maryland, Southern Methodist and host Ohio State.
"The teams at this year’s event, representing 24 of the top undergraduate business colleges across that nation, were all extremely competitive," says Helen Dashney, the team’s adviser. "It was not until the final five questions in the 90-question final round that the MSU team pulled ahead to win. It was very exciting!"
According to the event’s academic director, an Ohio State professor, the competition is an example of applied learning in action. The quiz show format can be compared to high-pressure situations that new graduates will confront in the business world and can help them develop their skills in real-time analysis, decision-making, teamwork and public speaking.
