Increase Visibility and Maximize Success On Campus
Organizations are continuously striving to reach out and increase their visibility on campus and with students. If you are interested in any of the following outreach programs or would like to discuss other ideas, contact a Lear Center staff member 517/432-0830.
BRAND NEW INITIATIVE: INCREASE YOUR ORGANIZATION'S BRANDING VIA MEDIA PROJECTS
PRODUCED IN OUR NEW MEDIA STUDIO:
The Lear Center along with the entire MSU Career Services network has a leading edge within the career services field with its new Union Pacific Media Studio. The fully-staffed, state-of-the art studio (housed within the Lear Career Center) has perfected the means to partner with organizations to increase their branding visibility while also delivering career service-related information to students in a bold, dynamic, and quick delivery strategy. For more information about getting involved in this endeavor, please contact Geoff Humphrys at humphry1@msu.edu or Vern Mason at masonl@msu.edu or call 517/432-0830.
BROAD FRESHMAN PROGRAM:
The Broad Freshman Program is a one year residential program to integrate the living and learning aspects of college for participating incoming freshman in the College of Business. In addition to the residential experience, housed in Shaw Hall, the program will include a wide array of professional developmental opportunities. The overall mission of the program is to attract and prepare students for the challenges of leadership and management in a business environment. Employers may wish to offer donations for various programming events and activities, in addition to facilitating site visits for the group or special presentations. For more information on getting involved in the Broad Freshman Program, contact Ashley Adams at adams@bus.msu.edu or 517/432-0830.
PROJECT GREEN:
Project Green is the ongoing community service effort sponsored by the MSU Career Services Network. The mission is a collaboration of efforts of students and business representatives in order to make a difference in the surrounding community. Project Green started in 2001 as a single event open only to business students. The endeavor has since expanded to ten events distributed throughout the academic year which are open to all MSU students. For more information on getting involved in Project Green, contact Erin Crouch at msuprojectgreen@gmail.com or 517/432-0830.
ASSIST WITH MOCK INTERVIEWS:
Each semester, the Lear Center sponsors mock interview days for students. Employers volunteer their time to assist students to develop and improve their interviewing skills. Another option is to participate in video conference interviews so that students obtain experience with this technology.
SERVE AS A JOB SHADOWING SITE:
It is very beneficial for students to have an opportunity to spend some time shadowing a professional in various fields. This provides the student with an overview of what various professions are like.
CONDUCT SPECIAL TOPIC PRESENTATIONS:
Students are very interested in learning about various aspects of the business field. Employers can serve as presenters on special career-related topics in the field such as business ethics, job survival, organizational culture, etc.
CONDUCT COMPANY PRESENTATIONS:
Many organizations plan a pre-night before the interview day. This session provides interviewees and other attendees with an overview and background of the company. This allows the interview time to be more focused on the candidates. The pre-night presentation can be scheduled along with the on-campus interview date.
CONDUCT CUSTOMIZED PRESENTATIONS
TO STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS:
Employers can reach the population that they are attempting to recruit by making a presentation during one of the student organization meetings. It also provides an opportunity to share insight into the field and network with the student membership.
PARTICIPATE IN LEADERSHIP TRAINING:
Each August, the Lear Center conducts leadership training for the student organization executive members. This group consists of The Eli Broad College of Business student organizations in addition to business-related student organizations. Employers are encouraged to participate in a leadership role in various facets of the training.
PARTICIPATE IN THE FRESHMAN SEMINAR:
Each Fall, several sections of the Freshman Seminar are offered as an optional course for Freshmen. The focus of the course is on academic and career decision-making. Each section consists of approximately 25 students. Employers are encouraged to participate in a leadership role in the Freshman Seminar.
CONDUCT CLASS PRESENTATIONS:
Employers can present on various topics in an actual class-providing the students with expertise in a specific subject area as well as showcasing the organization. It is important to allow sufficient lead-time when planning this strategy so that faculty can integrate the speaker(s) and topic into their class syllabi.
CONNECT WITH BUSINESS FACULTY:
Employers can provide case studies from their organization for courses. Faculty can also assist with conducting research or special projects for the organizations.
OFFER INTERNSHIPS:
There is nothing better than a satisfied employee for word of mouth promotion of an organization. Internships can provide students with invaluable "real-world" experiences. Interns can also serve as on-campus ambassadors to promote the organization when they return to school.
