About 320 Shabazz Public School Academy students had reason to fill their gymnasium with cheers and applause this morning.
They had just received $430 worth of new notebooks, rulers, pens, pencils and other school supplies from Michigan State University students.
The MSU students, who in July participated in the Eli Broad College of Business Summer Business Institute, collected the supplies during a "Stuff the Bus!" event.
As part of the summer institute, the MSU students were assigned to teams engaged in community service, with each student donating school supplies.
"I know what it's like to need stuff, and it's good to give back to the community," said MSU freshman Dominique Cobb, 18, who participated in the summer institute program.
Over the past seven years, the "Stuff the Bus!" event has generated $3,400 in school supplies, organizers said. Supplies have been donated to schools in both Lansing and East Lansing.
This is the fourth year the Shabazz Public School Academy has received supplies.
"Like many schools, we're always pressed for resources," said Chief School Administrator Eugene Cain. "And any time we have the opportunity to receive resources, we are grateful and appreciative."
At the end of the brief morning assembly, the MSU students mingled with the Shabazz students to talk about school and future careers.
"We want them to be successful," said Anne Crain, a coordinator of the event, "and we we want our MSU students ro be role models for them."
