Research
The Department of Management is comprised of a large number of scholars who publish in the areas of organizational behavior (OB), human resource management (HR) and strategic management (SM).
The OB/HR faculty conducts research at both the individual and group levels. Numerous faculty members conduct research on leadership, motivation, employee reactions and attitudes (including affective reactions, organizational justice perceptions), individual differences (personality, cultural intelligence), employee behaviors (citizenship behaviors, workplace deviance, individual decision making), psychological well-being (job and life satisfaction, work-family balance), personnel selection, mentoring, socialization, performance appraisal, job design and job analysis. Many faculty members also investigate issues related to groups and teams, such as team decision making, group performance, and negotiations. Research is conducted in the laboratory (e.g., in the Team Effectiveness Research Lab (http://www.bus.msu.edu/mgt/lab/) and the field.
The SM faculty examines a broad range of issues centered on process-oriented aspects of organizational strategy. SM faculty members draw upon theoretical perspectives from the management literature as well as from disciplinary fields, such as economics, psychology, and sociology, to study the strategic actions and positioning of organizations. Specific topics currently being examined by our faculty include strategic decision making, the selection and integration of resources, corporate governance, mergers and acquisitions, organizational risk taking, organizational learning, and innovation and change.
Management faculty regularly publish in the leading journals in management and applied psychology, such as Academy of Management Journal, Academy of Management Review, Strategic Management Journal, Organization Science, Journal of Applied Psychology, Organizational Behavior and Human Decision Processes, and Personnel Psychology.
The Management Department places a high priority on developing doctoral students. Our department fosters boundary spanning research encompassing organizational behavior, human resource management, organization theory, and strategic management. We invite you to reference the individual faculty members’ profiles to learn more about our research interests.
