Lewis Quality and Withrow Teacher-Scholar awards promote faculty and program excellence

Awards funded by alumni endowments

"Winners of the annual Lewis Quality and Withrow Teacher- Scholar awards raise the bar for excellence at the Broad School each year," said Robert B. Duncan, the Eli and Edythe L. Broad Dean, as he introduced the 2003 award recipients last week.

The 2003 Richard L. Lewis Quality of Excellence awards were presented to winners in four categories: undergraduate student, graduate student, faculty and staff.

This year's undergraduate award went to the Finance Association Board for outstanding service to their membership. Wayne Carlson (MBA '03) received the graduate student award for his work on MBA case competitions. Lynne Zelenski received the staff award for her efforts in recruiting accounting majors. Finally, there was a tie for the faculty award: Glenn Omura was honored for his work in support of the MBA program, and Shawnee Vickery and Dave Closs were recognized for the initiation of two new masters program, the Master of Science in Manufacturing and Innovation http://www.bus.msu.edu/msc/msmi/, and the Master of Science in Logistics http://www.bus.msu.edu/msc/logistics/.

The Strategic Direction Committee of the Broad Alumni Association Board of Directors reviews nominations and selects the winners based on seven quality characteristics: innovation, entrepreneurship, teamwork, demonstrated improvement, accomplishment of stated objectives, clarity of communication, and support of the mission and goals of the Broad School

The Lewis Quality of Excellence Award was established in 1995 with a gift from Michael J. and Marietta Kelly, and is named in honor of long-time business college dean Richard Lewis.

Three faculty members received Withrow Teacher-Scholar awards, the Broad School's highest faculty honor. Kathy Petroni, was presented with the 2003 John D. and Dortha J Withrow Teacher Scholar Award in recognition of her research on insider trading. A new Withrow award category was inaugurated in 2003 with the presentation of the John D. and Dortha J. Withrow Emerging Scholar awards. The first recipients are Charlie Hadlock and Joan Luft in recognition of their contributions in institutional and scholarly activities by an early career faculty member.

John D. Withrow (BA '54, MBA' 71) and Dortha J. Withrow (BA '55), for whom the award is named, endowed the program in 1990.
