“My alumni mentor has helped immensely in my getting involved with my profession.”

Profile:

When Emily Ebersbacher, a senior from Chesteron, OH, outside of Cleveland, decided upon MSU’s The School of Hospitality Business, she says she was prepared for faculty involvement. “I knew about The School’s faculty, their knowledge of the industry, and their number one ranking in research productivity. And I had heard that they help students in a lot of ways, like writing letters of recommendation and helping them find internships and the right career path.”

In her three years at MSU, she has certainly found the faculty reputation to be well-deserved. But she has found that alumni engagement has been important in her life, as well. Participating in The School’s unique Spartan Sponsors Mentor Program, Emily says that the guidance and advice she has received from her mentor has been extremely valuable in helping her understand and get involved in the hospitality industry while still a student.

Emily is very grateful for the faculty and alumni involvement in her education, but she also acknowledges that her own involvement in The School’s Hospitality Association has also been formative. “For two years, I was HA’s vice president of Alumni Relations, and during my senior year I will be chief financial officer. I have had hands-on experience, planning and executing four graduation luncheons, volunteering for Les Gourmets, and participating in CAREER EXPO and Vegas Night.”

These kinds of experiences, her two internships, and Study Abroad in Hong Kong, Macao, and China have helped Emily succeed in the classroom and promise to give her a well-rounded resume when she begins her career in meeting and event planning. Emily agrees. “I have benefited immensely by choosing The School. Interacting with the faculty and alumni, participating in Schools clubs and events, receiving four scholarships – they have all created life-changing opportunities.”
