Undergraduate Admissions/Application

Prospective students seeking application to Michigan State University should consult the Office of Admissions.

If you are a freshman or a sophomore, you may declare Hospitality Business as a major. The formal on-line admission process is described below. Enrollments are limited, and admission is competitive.

What are the differences between the admission requirements for The School of Hospitality Business and the rest of the Broad College?

Those seeking admission must meet the criteria below:

  1. Completion of at least 56 credits acceptable to The School of Hospitality Business and an academic record that meets the requirements of Academic Standing of Undergraduate Students.
  2. Completion of at least four of the following Business core courses: MTH 103, EC 201, EC 202, ACC 201, CSE 101, and STT 201.
         * Substitutions with higher level courses may be used.
  3. Completion of at least two of the following Hospitality Business core courses: HB 237, HB 265, and HB 267.
  4. Admission decisions are based primarily on the student's cumulative University grade point average, Business core grade point average from the completed Business core courses listed above, and Hospitality Business grade point average from the completed Hospitality Business core courses listed above. The completed application requires a statement of intent and goals, as well as documented work experience and membership and involvement in service activities where applicable. These factors will also be considered for admission.

Application due dates are as follows:

Fall deadline: November 15

Spring deadline: April 15

Summer deadline: August 5

Online Undergraduate Application to The School of Hospitality Business for all of the following:

  • CURRENT Hospitality Business sophomores REACHING 56 credits in a given semester, or
  • NON-Hospitality students with 56+ earned credits applying to CHANGE their major to Hospitality Business, or
  • NON-Hospitality students with 56 + earned credits applying to ADD an additional major or second degree to Hospitality Business.

Also Helpful To Know:

  • University policy requires that a student with 56, or more, credits must be admitted into a degree granting college.
  • The on-line Undergraduate Application to The School of Hospitality Business is required as part of the admission review process.
  • All applicants are reviewed at the end of the semester in which they apply for admission to The School.
  • Certain applicants who do not meet the minimum admission standards may be granted "Conditional Admission" to The School. That status will allow you to improve your gpa or take the required courses for admission to The School.
  • Completion of the Level I or Level II internship is not required for admission.
  • Applicants who have been denied admission must change their major from Hospitality Business, but may reapply the following semester. These students may be granted limited access to HB courses with permission from academic advisors in The School.
  • Applicants who meet the minimum admission standards and submit an acceptable on-line undergraduate application will be admitted to The School of Hospitality Business.
  • The Admissions Data below lists the gpa averages for Hospitality Business students who have been admitted for specific semesters.
