Research interests/Areas of expertise
- Commercial banking; investment banking; financial markets; European Monetary Union and countries of Eastern Europe
- Mortgage-backed securities financing, an area of great current interest in Russia and the eastern-European transformation countries as they seek to accelerate economic growth and financial market development. One major goal is to increase the proportion of home ownership leading to greater political stability and economic progress.
Bio(s)
- Alan E. Grunewald is a professor in the Department of Finance at the Broad School–he has been at the Broad School since 1954.
He holds a Ph.D. in finance, an MS in economics and an MBA in finance, from the University of Wisconsin, Madison and is a member of numerous honor societies. In addtion to various teaching postions in the US including the Graduate Management Banking School in Madison for many years, he is internationally recognized and has taught at various overseas academic institutions including Universidade do Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, (three years), the Technische Universitat Berlin, (two years), University of Potsdam, Berlin, the Finance Academy of the Federation of Russian States in Moscow, as well as the University of Wisconsin in Madison. He is knowledgeable in various languages and presened his classes in Germany and in Brazil in German and Portuguese.
Dr. Grunewald regularly teaches commercial banking at the Universiity of Potsdam in the summer beginning in 2004and also teaching in Moscow in 2005. Plans are to teach in St, Petersburg in 2007.
In addition to teaching, Dr. Grunewald has published many research papars and wriltten numerous financial management texts and appeared on many professional Programs He was chairperson and president at Midwest Finance Association and a member of the editorial council for Management International Review (Germany)from 1958 to 1965. Also, he has extensive consulting experience with government, and money center and community banks and has served on the boards of several banking institutions for many years.
He continues active in teaching, research, consulting and international travel.
Outside interests include flying (private pilot licence) , blue water sailing, and amatuer radio (Extra class license).
